Forty-one Luverne High School incoming juniors and seniors attended the first ever LHS Summer Leadership Retreat at the Lakota Retreat Center at Lake Shetek July 15-16. The group included student council members and students planning to be peer helpers in the upcoming school year.

Peer Helping advisors Amy Cook and Stacy Schepel, Student Council advisor Jason Berghorst, High School Principal Ryan Johnson, Activities Director Todd Oye, and two parent chaperones also participated in the retreat.

The students spent time as a large group learning about student leadership skills, hearing updates on the new school year from Mr. Johnson, and discussing school-wide goals for the year ahead. Peer Helpers received training on tutoring and working with others and student council members began planning Homecoming 2019, among other topics.

Juniors and seniors also met separately to conduct some class-specific business, such as selecting a senior class motto. Time was also spent on a project that will welcome new students and staff to school in September.

In addition to training and organizational work, the students also enjoyed team building activities and outdoor recreation at the lake. The students are pictured lakeside at Key Largo restaurant after a group dinner.
