The annual Battle Axe football game between the Luverne Cardinals and the Pipestone Arrows featured more than competition on the field.

Spectators were also encouraged to participate in a community food drive, with trucks from Papik Motors and Dahl Motors stationed at the entrance to collect donations.

Peyten Elbers, a Luverne Elementary School teacher, introduced the idea to the student council. “The idea actually started last spring when Brooks Maurer shared it with me,” she explained. “With his go-ahead this fall, we were able to bring it to life.”

The drive collected 750 pounds of food for the Pipestone and Luverne communities.

Elbers said she was proud of the community’s generosity and expressed hope the project will continue. “My hope is that this becomes an annual tradition so we can continue to support both the Pipestone and Luverne food shelves each year during the Battle Axe,” she said.
